Youtube restricts certain videos
I just read an article that says Youtube is going to restrict sexually provocative videos to people who are 18 and over. And any suggestive videos will not be include in the most popular lists. I think it is a good idea, but it really does not prevent kids from viewing, it just makes it a little more difficult, And there are plenty of other places they can find explicit material on the web. What do you think?

It's tricky isn't it. I'm not a big fan on censorship, but I soon find I have limits of acceptability (peadophile images for instance; scenes with sexual violence; etc.)
The fact that I regard my moral boudaries as reasonably broad would be of no consolation to those who feel what they do is harmless.
I think ISPs should be taking a lot more responsibility for what they allow to reach a wider audience.
It's a shame that we can't have a global watchdog to counter the "it will only get posted somewhere else" argument... but then that's as unlikely as world peace breaking out spontaneously - we'd never all agree.

I think the key point is that YouTube doesn't want to pay for the bandwidth for these sorts of things that they feel are probably hurting the value of their brand more than helping it,

Interesting. I think it's a good move for youtube, and I applaud that. From a pessimists standpoint, though, if it's not on youtube, it'll still be somewhere else.

Sure if kids want to watch they'll find it somewhere else, but every little bit helps. My kids are always looking at Youtube, I would feel much better knowing they won't accidentally find something inappropriate.

YouPorn and RedTube or XTube or whatever the exact addresses are. are all incredibly readily available. Like "are you over 21"? yes/no, ok ENTER and view.
My take on it is that it is all for YouTube's image.
And I know we say, "it's up to the parents" and yet HOW DO you manage, restrict and shepherd 7x24x365 with everything out there when the technology is always changing and they can look in just a moment?
