If you need a hotel room at the last minute you are more likely to get a bargain by calling the hotel directly (not the 800 number) and speaking with the sales manager. Tell them you are shopping for a room in the area and want to know what is the best price you can get. If the hotel has vacancies you can get 50%+ discounts or get a suite for the price of a basic room.

I have found that the hotel coupon books at the welcome centers can often get you screaming good deals. I always carry these in my car when travelling. 40-50% off on popular hotels is not uncommon in those books,

I also have a AAA card which is almost always good for 10% off the best rate...

I'm like Rob...when I travel I go the McDonalds or a truck stop and they have the travel coupon magazines...and some are great deals.
